No. 10 Rowing has Strong Showing against Gonzaga

Spokane, Wash. – The No. 10 Washington State women's rowing team opened the spring season in dual action taking five of six races from neighboring-rival No. 19 Gonzaga, Friday at Silver Lake.

Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said, “I am glad that racing season has finally started.”

The Cougar varsity four (coxswain-Ellie Burg, Codi Swenson, Lori VerMurlen, Jenna Kennedy, bow-Katrina Tarrant) and the second varsity four (coxswain-Bethany Pupava, Tori Gerken, Katie Persley, Jill Hannink, bow-Miranda Armstrong) opened the day with a pair of wins in their respective flights. Washington State's varsity four finished eight seconds ahead of Gonzaga with a time of 7:46.63 and WSU's second varsity four finished with a time of 7:51.61, two seconds ahead of Gonzaga's second varsity four.

Washington State's second varsity eight (coxswain-Rebecca Burns, stroke-Emily Thomson, Taija Thompson, Jessi Howe, Kim Coon, Jess Brougham, Sarah Steger, Jessica Newson, bow-Brittany Brooks) and Gonzaga's second varsity eight were both slowed down by seaweed. The Cougars fought through the poor conditions and finished with a time of 6:54.79, nearly eight seconds ahead of the Bulldogs.

The Washington State varsity eight (coxswain-Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Savannah Davison, Morgan Cathrea, Jordan Watson, Kotryna Lasiate, Chloe Rogers, Lucie Weissova, Emily Morrow, bow-Mihaela-Teodora Berindei) was locked in a tight race with the Bulldogs. The Cougars were out to a seven-seat lead when the race was stopped due to seaweed on the Gonzaga boat's skag. After the restart, Gonzaga used a late surge to defeat the Cougars, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:40.61, only one second ahead of WSU.

The WSU third varsity eight (coxswain-Taylor Brown, stroke-Sara Brevick, Megan Lee, Paige Danielson, Sheena Polman, Colleen Gibbons, Katie Weir, Tammy Hilgensorf, bow-Kaisha Davis) outlasted Gonzaga's third varsity eight, crossing the finish line in 7:23.69, 10 seconds ahead of the Bulldogs.

In the final race of the day, the Washington State fourth varsity eight (coxswain-Kyla Emme, stroke-Grace Arnis, Kaycee Faber, JoAnne Bates, Megan Compton, Mahal Johnson, Samantha Eilers, Hunter Jones, bow-Sophia Rogers) out-stroked Gonzaga's fourth varsity eight boat. The Cougars' fourth varsity eight outlasted the Bulldogs, finishing with a time of 7:24.30, six seconds ahead of the competition.

The Cougars will return to the water Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3, at the 43rd annual San Diego Crew Classic.
