COUGAR BASEBALL OPENS SEASON ON THE ROAD

The Washington State baseball team travels to Southern California to play four road games that will open its 2014 season...Cougars take on Cal State Fullerton for three games, Friday (7 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) before battling UC Riverside, Monday (noon)...Washington State is 261-247 under Donnie Marbut, who is in his 10th season as head coach of the Washington State program and 11th overall in Pullman...Marbut is assisted by Gregg Swenson, Pat Waer and Michael Naughton.

Washington State is receiving votes in a pair of preseason polls (Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA).

ABOUT THE TITANS

Cal State Fullerton was 51-10 in 2013...won Big West Conference and Fullerton Regional before losing two games to national champion UCLA in the Fullerton Super Regional...ranked No. 1 in three preseason polls (Collegiate Baseball, ESPN/USA Today and NCBWA)...fourth-ranked team in Baseball America poll.

ABOUT THE HIGHLANDERS

UC Riverside was 22-32 last season...finished eighth in the Big West Conference and did not advance to the postseason...hosts San Francisco, Friday-Sunday prior to entertaining Washington State.

COUGARS AGAINST THE BIG WEST

Washington State is 13-7 against schools in the Big West Conference (at the time of the game) under head coach Donnie Marbut...Cougars will play eight times against Big West opponents in 2014...in addition to season-opening trip to Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 14-16) and UC Riverside (Feb. 17), Washington State will play a four-game series at Cal State Northridge, Feb. 27-March 2...Cougars won 9-8 at No. 8 Cal State Fullerton, March 13, 2012...have not played UC Riverside in the Marbut era...have won five of seven meetings with Cal State Northridge since Marbut took over the program in 2005.

Redshirt-junior Scott Simon will take the mound in Friday’s season-opener at Cal State Fullerton...notched a pair of road victories last season, including a five-hit shutout at Utah, April 6...first shutout by a Cougar hurler since Wade Parrish (at San Jose State, 1999)...first in conference road game since Todd Belitz (at Portland State, 1996)...first nine inning shutout in a conference game since Kyle Kawabata (vs. Washington, 1995)...first nine inning shutout in conference road game since Aaron Sele (at Oregon State, 1990).

PRESEASON ACCOLADES

Senior Jason Monda (first team) and junior Yale Rosen (second team) were named to the Madness All-Pac-12 Preseason Team at utiliy...Monda, a first baseman, outfielder, left-handed pitcher (19th) and junior right-handed pitcher Tanner Chleborad (20th) are among Baseball America’s top prospects in the conference for the 2014 MLB Draft...Baseball America projects Washington State as an NCAA Regional team.

COMEBACK COUGARS

Under head coach Donnie Marbut, currently in his 10th season as the Washington State skipper, the Cougars have posted 123 come-from-behind victories.

SMART GUY

Washington State catcher Collin Slaybaugh was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Baseball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) during his junior season...boasted a 4.00 GPA as a movement studies major and earned his bachelor’s degree in May, 2013...Slaybaugh was honorable mention All-Pac-12...led the Cougars in batting average (.317), runs (32) and stolen bases (12)...played in 48 games for Washington State as a catcher and outfielder...threw out 39 percent of runners attempting to steal.

TOUGH SCHEDULE

Washington State is slated to play 43 of its 56 games against teams ranked or receiving votes in at least one preseason poll...games are split 22 on the road and 21 at home (20 in Pullman, one in Pasco)...eight-game road trip, March 14-23 has Cougars facing Arizona and UCLA in three-game series to open Pac-12 play sandwiched around a two-game set at San Diego.
