PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team opened and closed Saturday in similar fashion, with convincing victories at the Simmelink Tennis Courts. The Cougars opened the day with a 6-1 win over UC Santa Barbara and concluded with a 4-1 showing against Seattle. With the victories the Cougars improve to 8-1 for the season.
Against Seattle, the Cougars wasted no time jumping out on top. For the eighth time in nine matches this season, the Cougars captured the opening doubles point as No. 3 Charlotte Koning and Dajana Ognjenovic defeated Kailyn Skjonsby and Samantha Garrard6-0 followed by Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht’s 6-2 win over Kelli Woodman and Barbara Carey at No. 1. The No. 2 match between WSU’s Olga Musilovich and Maria Biryukova and Seattle’s Anna Lambert and Kristen James was stopped with WSU leading 3-2.
Luzina made it 2-0 Cougars as she was the first off in singles, defeating Woodman 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 Luzina pushed her win total to a team-leading 19 for the season against just three losses. Leenknecht pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Ognjenovic clinched the team win for WSU at No. 5 as she defeated James 6-3, 6-2. At No. 6 Garrard won the final three games to defeat Emily Funabiki, 6-3, 7-5.
To assist with Seattle’s travel schedule, both teams agreed to play the first to four and all other matches, if started, would be abandoned. With the Cougars getting wins at one, two and five, the remaining two singles matches, at No. 3 and No. 4, were not contested.
In the UCSB match, the Cougars captured the opening doubles point. Once again, it was in impressive fashion as the No. 1 team of Luzina and Leenknecht had little trouble with the Gauchos pair of Kai Boyer and Melissa Baker, winning 6-1. At No. 2, Biryukova and Musilovich clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 victory over April Scatliffe and Priscilla Garcia. The third doubles match was halted with the Cougars Koning and Ognjenovic leading Stacy Yam and Luisa Ortiz Candido, 4-3.
In singles play Biryukova quickly increased WSU’s lead to 2-0 as she was the first off the court following a 6-1, 6-0 win over Yam at No. 3. Luzina made it 3-0 after she won a 6-2, 6-2 decision against Boyer at No. 1. Leenknecht clinched the victory for WSU as she posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Scatliffe at No. 2, giving WSU an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
With the team victory secured, Koning at No. 6 retired after just one game against Melissa Baker, giving the Gauchos their lone victory.
At No. 5 Ognjenovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Garcia while Musilovich needed a 10-point tiebreaker for the third set to defeat Paulo Cos at No. 4, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4).
The Cougars return to the court Friday when they host Fresno State at noon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
