Jon Harvey joined the Washington State University soccer staff in February, 2014.
Since joining the staff, Harvey has guided WSU goalkeepers and backline to success. During his second season in Pullman, Harvey assisted in WSU’s fifth-consecutive postseason berth. Overseeing first-year goalkeeper Ella Dederick, Harvey helped the Cougars maintain a 0.92 goals against average with four shutouts. Dederick recorded 99 saves in the season, the most by a WSU goalkeeper since 2008. Dederick was selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and the NSCAA All-Pacific Region Third Team. She also earned Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors, Oct. 13, for her shutout performances against Utah and Colorado.
In his first season with the Cougars, Harvey oversaw the success of goalkeeper Gurveen Clair. The 2014 Cougars’ 0.74 goals against average tied for the third-best average in program history. Under the guidance of Harvey, Clair and WSU recorded nine shutouts, second in school history behind Clair’s school-record 13 shutouts in 2013. Harvey led to Clair to 10 wins on the season, bringing her career total to 44 wins, the most by any goalkeeper in WSU history.
Harvey came to Pullman from UNCG where he was an assistant for one season under former WSU Head Coach Steve Nugent. With the Spartans, Harvey was the goalkeeping coach and recruiting coordinator. Under his tutelage, UNCG lowered its goals against average from 1.02 to 0.75, good for 35th nationally. He coached Jamie Simmons, who recorded the 18th-best save percentage in the nation last season.
Prior to his stint at UNCG, Harvey was a volunteer coach at Georgia (2011-12) and worked primarily with goalkeepers. He helped All-SEC and all-region goalkeeper Ashley Baker etch her name in the Georgia record books in nearly every category. Baker signed a professional contract in England and earned a call up to the Senior National Team’s camp following her career at Georgia. She was the 20th overall pick by Sky Blue FC in the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League college draft.
From 2006-10, Harvey was an assistant coach at NCAA Division II North Georgia. The Saints won 58 percent of their matches during that span, earned their first NSCAA Top 25 ranking and reached the Peachbelt Conference Tournament championship match.
Harvey was instrumental in lowering North Georgia’s goals against average from 1.79 in 2005 (the year prior to his arrival) to a program-best 1.03 in 2010 (his final season). He recruited and trained 13 All-Peachbelt Conference performers, five NSCAA All-South Region selections, and NSCAA All-American and a Peachbelt Conference Freshman of the Year. Harvey’s responsibilities also included practice planning, fundraising, travel and recruiting.
From 2000-05, Harvey served in the United States Navy. His military career included decorated combat tours in Al Anbar Province, Iraq in 2004 and 2005.
Harvey is also on staff with the USSF as well as the Region III ODP goalkeeping. He has become a member of US Soccer National Training Centers in Atlanta and Jacksonville, Fla. He holds a USSF “B” License and NSCAA Levels I, II and III Goalkeeping Diplomas.
Harvey is a graduate of North Georgia and is married to his wife, Raegan.
