In their final home meet of the 2013-14 season, the Cougars will compete in a dual meet Friday against conference opponent Oregon State at Gibb Pool…Washington State will celebrate senior day at Friday’s meet, which begins at 5 p.m…the dual meet will include 12 individual events and two relay events, for a total of 14 events.
Washington State is coming off two consecutive home dual meets against UCLA last weekend…the Cougars dropped both meets to UCLA, falling to 2-5 in dual meets this season...the Bruins set a total of four Gibb Pool records during the two meets…Alison Mand notched an individual first-place finish in Friday’s meet in the 50 free with a time of 24.25 seconds…junior Nicole Proulx led Washington State in scoring in Saturday’s meet with 13 points individually…she finished first in the 100 free and second in the 200 free, and swam the first leg on the 400 free relay team that placed second…the Cougars have three meets remaining before the Pac-12 Championships.
WSU LAST SEASON
The Cougars finished 6-6 in dual meets last season in one of the strongest swimming conferences in the country…finished sixth in a competitive field of 10 teams at the Hawkeye Invitational, and placed ninth at the Pac-12 Championships…Loree Olson highlighted the season by becoming the Cougar all-time record holder in the 400 IM…Olson also placed second all-time on the Washington State records list in the 200 back, and made the top-10 lists in two other events…Emma Johansson placed in the top three of the Cougar all-time lists in the 50 free, 100 back, and 100 butterfly…Shelbi Luchini notched the third-best time in Cougar history in the 200 back, as did Kelly Tannhauser in the 400 IM…total of eight Cougar swimmers made the Cougar all-time top-ten lists.
The 21-member squad returns 14 letterwinners, including seniors Taylor Indahl, Emma Johansson, Anne Kenney, Heather Morlan, and Kelly Tannhauser…Washington State welcomes seven freshmen to the team.
Head coach Tom Jager enters his third year at Washington State after spending seven years coaching at Idaho…Jager is a six-time NCAA Champion, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist…Jager is joined by assistant coach Adriana Quirke…Quirke was Jager’s assistant coach at Idaho for his last three seasons with the Vandals, and quickly made the move to Washington State after Jager was hired as the Cougars’ head coach…rounding out the Cougar coaching staff are volunteer assistant coach Jesse Grow and student assistant coach Kelsey Bruggman.
HIGHLIGHTING OREGON STATE
The Beavers welcomed 10 freshmen to their 2013-14 team and returned three seniors…they are coached by Larry Liebowitz, who is in his 10th season as the head coach of the Beavers…Oregon State 3-10 in dual meets this season, having notched dual meet victories this season over San Diego, Seattle, and Northern Arizona…the Beavers are 0-6 against conference opponents, with losses to California, Utah, Stanford, UCLA, Arizona, and Arizona State.
