The Washington State swimming team will open spring competition with two dual meets against UCLA at Gibb Pool in Pullman, Wash…the meets will be contested Friday and Saturday, with Friday’s competition beginning at 5 p.m. and Saturday’s competition at 11 a.m…Friday’s meet will include 11 events with two relays…Saturday’s meet will have 12 events, including one relay.
The UCLA dual meets come after more than a month without competition for Washington State…the last competition for the Cougars was the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, where they placed sixth…on day one of the three-day meet, the relay team of Emma Johansson, Alison Mand, Haley Rose Love, and Anne Kenney recorded a time of 1:31.66 in the 200 free, placing second…the time broke the previous school record by three tenths of a second…Washington State scored 387.5 points in its sixth-place finish at the Hawkeye Invitational…the Cougars are 2-3 in dual meets this season.
WSU LAST SEASON
The Cougars finished 6-6 in dual meets last season in one of the strongest swimming conferences in the country…finished sixth in a competitive field of 10 teams at the Hawkeye Invitational, and placed ninth at the Pac-12 Championships…Loree Olson highlighted the season by becoming the Cougar all-time record holder in the 400 IM…Olson also placed second all-time on the Washington State records list in the 200 back, and made the top-10 lists in two other events…Emma Johansson placed in the top three of the Cougar all-time lists in the 50 free, 100 back, and 100 butterfly…Shelbi Luchini notched the third-best time in Cougar history in the 200 back, as did Kelly Tannhauser in the 400 IM…total of eight Cougar swimmers made the Cougar all-time top-ten lists.
The 21-member squad returns 14 letterwinners, including seniors Taylor Indahl, Emma Johansson, Anne Kenney, Heather Morlan, and Kelly Tannhauser…Washington State welcomes seven freshmen to the team.
Head coach Tom Jager enters his third year at Washington State after spending seven years coaching at Idaho…Jager is a six-time NCAA Champion, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist…Jager is joined by assistant coach Adriana Quirke…Quirke was Jager’s assistant coach at Idaho for his last three seasons with the Vandals, and quickly made the move to Washington State after Jager was hired as the Cougars’ head coach…rounding out the Cougar coaching staff are volunteer assistant coach Jesse Grow and student assistant coach Kelsey Bruggman.
The Bruins welcomed 13 freshmen to the team for the 2013-14 season, and return eight seniors…the UCLA swimming team is coached by Cyndi Gallagher, who is in her 26th season as the Bruins’ head coach…in the 2012-13 season, UCLA notched 11 dual meet wins, the most in its program’s history for a single season, and placed fifth at the Pac-12 Championships…the Bruins are 5-1 in dual meets thus far in the 2013-14 season, including wins over conference opponents Oregon State and Arizona State and a loss to Arizona.
