The spirit of the Apple Cup rivalry extends beyond Friday’s game at Husky Stadium.

Far beyond.

Members of the Washington Army National Guard's 181st BDOC and 96th MET in Kuwait are enjoying an Apple Cup rivalry of their own between the Cougars and Huskies in the unit.

The photos featured here were sent by 2009 WSU graduate and Washington National Guard member Casey (Olson) St. Clair. The photo of the Cougar and Husky flags was taken earlier this month "in the spirit of competition," as Casey said.

The second photo (below) is of the Cougar banner and football, which is signed by the Cougar Football team and a birthday gift to Second Lieutenant (2LT) Byron Adams from his girlfriend.

"I couldn't have asked for a better birthday gift," said Adams, a 2012 WSU graduate, in an e-mail from Kuwait.

The meaning of the Apple Cup is more than just the rivalry for both the Cougars and Huskies deployed in Kuwait.

"This game is always a fun rivalry every year, but this year I think it means a little more, especially deployed as a member of the Washington National Guard," said Benjamin Huebschman, a graduate of Washington and former player for the Huskies, said in an e-mail. "Having that attachment to your state reinforces that loyalty, which all of us here are a part of. It brings our deployed unit together and definitely relives the stress of day-to-day work."

"It's been a great diversion while deployed to have a little rivalry between he WSU and UW fans among us," said Casey via e-mail.

The National Guard members are hopeful to watch the Apple Cup. It will be 11:30 p.m. in Kuwait when the Apple Cup kicks off at 12:30 p.m. Pacific Time at Husky Stadium.

“We’ve had a lot of fun keeping the competition alive from the other side of the world and we’ll be doing everything possible to tune into the game,” said Casey.

WSU graduates in both photos include:

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Steven Donnelly, 1988 -- 96th MET

Major (MAJ) Brendan Kealy, 1996 -- 96th MET

Captain (CPT) Casey St.Clair, 2009 -- 181st BDOC

Second Lieutenant (2LT) Byron Adams, 2012 -- 181st BDOC
