TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore Cara Wegner scored in the 27th minute to lift Washington State to a 1-0 victory at Arizona State in Pac-12 Conference women’s soccer, Sunday.
It was the second-straight match in which Wegner notched the game-winner as the Cougars (11-3-3, 4-3-1 Pac-12) swept their two-match road trip in Arizona for third-straight time (2009 and 2011).
“First and foremost, thank you to our fans who came out,” Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “They were there in big numbers and were loud and supportive.”
McAlpine added, “The soccer wasn’t pretty, but it was a great way to close out our weekend with a victory over a good Arizona State team.”
With the win, Washington State moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference at 13 points, one point behind third place Utah and two back of second place Stanford. The Sun Devils (8-7-1, 3-4-1 Pac-12) fell into a tie for seventh place with Oregon State at 10 points.
The Cougars’ goal was created by Micaela Castain as she fed a pass to Wegner who finished with a shot under the crossbar and inside the far left post.
Castain’s assist was her eighth of the season and ties the Cougar single-season mark. Deka DeWitt (1999), Liz Duncan (2000) and Nicole Wilcox (2002) also accomplished the feat.
The shutout was the 21st in redshirt junior Gurveen Clair’s career, tying a Washington State record. It was her 31st-career victory to set a Cougar record. She made six saves in the match, including five in the first half.
“Gurveen Clair and Rachael Doyle played unbelievable,” McAlpine said. “It was Gurveen’s best game and Rachael was a warrior for us.”
Washington State returns home to take on California, Friday at 2 p.m.
Senior Micaela Castain moved into third place on the Cougars’ all-time points list with 77…sophomore Cara Wegner notched her fourth game-winning goal in 2013, tied for fifth on the Washington State single-season list.
