PULLMAN, Wash. -- Cougars Ver’Leea Hardaway and Kyra Holt each had 14 kills but the Washington State volleyball team fell to California Saturday in Bohler Gym in scores of 15-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-16.

WSU, 15-6 overall, 2-6 in Pac-12 play, hit .161 for the match in spite of Hardaway hitting .458 on the night. Holt, one of five freshmen to see action Saturday night, had 16 digs, two aces and two blocks. Kate Sommer added another 16 digs while Jaicee Harris added 15 digs. Camryn Irwin had 31 assists and shared time with Haley MacDonald who tallied eight.

California moved to 11-6 overall, 4-4 in Pac-12 action. Christina Higgins led the Bears with 19 kills and hit .425 as the team hit .241 for the match. Adrienne Gehan had a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, in addition to leading the match with four aces. Maddy Kerr led the team with 16 digs and Joan Caloiaro had 46 assists and 13 digs.

“We let them go on too many runs. We really got stuck in some rotations and our passing broke down. We had the opportunities but we couldn’t put the ball away,” Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “Give credit to Cal as they made some great adjustments after that first set and started digging some balls. I was really proud of the way we played that first set and fought back in the second we needed to finish it off.”

WSU travels to Los Angeles next weekend to take on No. 1 USC Friday, Oct. 25, in a match to be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks, and UCLA Saturday, Oct. 26.
