CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Freshman Kyra Holt had 26 kills to lead the Washington State volleyball team (1-1, 14-1) to a thrilling 26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 26-28, 15-9 win over Oregon State (0-2, 9-4) at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis Friday night.

In addition to her 26 kills Holt hit .308, had 11 digs and six blocks. Jaicee Harris had 16 kills and 18 digs. Ver’Leea Hardaway added 10 kills and eight blocks. Camryn Irwin set a career-high 61 assists while Kate Sommer led the match with 21 digs. Freshman Tani Stephens from nearby Albany, Ore., served up two aces.

Oregon State’s leaders were Lila Toner with 20 kills and 13 digs, Sara Almen with 10 kills, Arica Nassar with eight blocks, Becky Defoe with 17 digs, and Tayla Woods with 46 assists.

“I’m very proud of the way the team fought. It’s tough being up 2-0 and going to five but they really did a nice job in the fifth set to finish it off,” Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “Camryn did a pretty nice job because their blockers were going with our middles so we were able to go outside and leave Kyra one-on-one a lot. Even though the middles didn’t get set much they were really doing their jobs.”

Asked how important a road win is in the Pac-12, Greeny said, “It’s huge and especially this early in the season. Coming off the loss and then coming around and respond and win on the road is huge.”

WSU stays on the road next week with matches at Utah Fri., Oct. 4 and at Colorado Sun., Oct. 6.
