Postgame Quotes: Idaho vs. WSU (Sept. 21, 2013)

Idaho Head Coach Paul Petrino:

On reaction to the game…
"They just kicked our butt. They beat us. You have to give them credit. We didn’t do a good job, so that’s what it came down to. They were doing a better job. We weren’t blocking well enough. They tackled well. There’s not a whole bunch to analyze. They kicked our butts. [We] didn’t do a good job of coaching, and didn’t do a good job of playing. That’s really the bottom line."

On finding an offensive rhythm…
"There were a couple times we got some first downs, and a couple times when we did some good things. We just couldn’t sustain anything and they got after us."

On the Idaho defense…
"I thought the defense actually played pretty hard all game. The Cougars obviously made a bunch of plays on us, but we didn’t take advantage when the defense did play well. We just took turns killing ourselves on offense."

On playing quarterback Josh McCain in the second half…
"[We were] just trying to get him some more reps. It was kind of a situation where the game was out of hand as it was, so just trying to get him some more work."

On WSU Quarterback Connor Halliday…
"He’s a good player. They have a good scheme. He did a lot of good things."

Head Coach Mike Leach:

On Connor Halliday’s ability to bounce back from interceptions…
"I think it is really important. I thought he played a pretty good game. He forced the one on the sideline which was disappointing. I thought he played a good game and managed the offense. Other than turnovers we were in probably seven of nine drives."

On the defense…
"I was really proud of them. They got a shutout so I was particularly proud of that. They worked hard to get a shutout. I was really glad to see them come up with it there at the end. It started to heat up really starting in the second quarter. I thought as a team that was our best quarter."

On Stanford…
"I thought we got a week better. Each week you try to improve an increment, and I thought we did this week. We had a great week of practices. Other than some spots I thought we had a pretty good game. We played hard. I thought early on we tried to make a little too much happen on all sides of the ball, and then we settled in and played better."

Center Elliot Bosch:

On overall thoughts on the game…
"I thought it was big to get some big plays on special teams. We’ve got to eliminate the penalties obviously. I think the defense played a huge game. That was big to get a shutout. I think we did some good things on offense and moved the ball well, but we’ve just got to take care of the ball better."

On confidence for next week…
"It builds confidence. We just have to keep playing hard and preparing hard. We can’t get overconfident."

On performance of the offensive line…
"I thought we played a pretty good game. I thought there was one drive at the end of the half that we would like to have back. There was a sack on that drive. I’ll have to see what happened on film, but that drive just felt like we didn’t finish it. Overall I thought we played pretty well."

Wide Receiver Gabe Marks:

On ability to excel…
"Every day is different. Every game is different. You just have to compete every day at practice. When the ball comes your way you just have to make a play on it."

On preparing for Stanford…
"It’s the same as we prepare for every game. Go to practice, practice hard, catch the ball. If we catch the ball we will do fine. As long as we go in there and make our plays, it will be a good game."

Quarterback Connor Halliday:

On his night…
"Pretty well, coach Leach always talks in the offense, if you can be a round 65- 70 percent in completion percentage, you’re doing something right, I think I was 72-73 so that was a big step for me. Other than the turnovers, pretty good game. Biggest thing, checking plays, was offensively we are getting into the good looks. We are kind of rolling with our play calling and things have been going alright."

On team’s confidence level…
"Something we have built on. There’s a different feel around this team. This is the closest group of guys I’ve ever been around. It’s almost got a little high school feel to it, we truly care about each other. We all are so close to everybody and that’s a big deal to us."

On last defensive series…
"Defense played unbelievable. We knew they were something special going against them in Lewiston during camp. But for them to come out and play these first four games they way then have is awesome."
