Volleyball Wins SHSU Tournament Moves to 10-0

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- A trio of Cougars had double-digit kills to lead the Washington State volleyball team to a 25-15, 25-14, 25-21 win over Sam Houston State (4-6) Saturday night as WSU won its third consecutive tournament in the Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.

Freshman Kyra Holt was named the Sam Houston Invitational MVP after a stellar performance including 12 kills and 14 digs in the title match. Cougars Ver’Leea Hardaway, with11 kills and a career-high 10 blocks, and Marcelina Glab, with five kills, a .500 hitting percentage and three blocks, were named to the all-tournament team.

Other Cougars contributing to the tournament title match win included Jaicee Harris with 11 kills and eight digs, Kate Sommer with 17 digs, Emmy Allen with four blocks, and Camryn Irwin with 31 assists.

After taking the first two sets in dominating fashion including a .417 and .325 hitting percentages, the Cougars found themselves down to the host Bearkats in the third set 13 to four. WSU battled back and tied the set at 16 and then went on a nine to five run, holding Sam Houston State to a -.052 hitting percentage in the final set.

“We played well all weekend especially offensively,” Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. “We came back from a pretty tough deficit and showed a lot of fight and dermination. I am really proud of our team.”

Sam Houston State was the runner-up in its own tournament. The Bearkats statistical leaders were Devene Wells-Gibson with 1 kills, Tayler Gray with 23 assists and 11 digs, and Breanna Homer with 18 digs.

Next on the schedule for WSU is hosting the Cougar Invitational Tournament Sept. 19-21, taking on Idaho, Seattle University and Nevada in Bohler Gym.
