PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior Micaela Castain scored a pair of goals and Washington State defeated visiting UNLV 2-0 in nonconference women’s soccer, Friday.

With the victory, the Cougars (5-0-1) are unbeaten through six matches for the first time in school history. The clean sheet was a school-record, fifth-straight shutout for Washington State.

“Our backline had done a good job all season,” Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “We have some depth at that position this year and that has been a big part of it.”

In the 31st minute, Kayla Johnson played a ball wide to Korynn Blanksma. A cross from the left off the foot of Blanksma was headed home by Castain.

The Cougars’ second goal came in the 49th minute on a similar play. Jocelyn Jeffers played the ball wide to Delaney Zalud. After beating a defender, Zalud sent in a cross from the left that Castain finished inside the near post past UNLV (4-2-1) goalkeeper Kylie Wassell.

Washington State controlled tempo for much of the match with the majority of UNLV’s nine shots coming in a pair of flurries. The Cougars finished with 10 shots, including a 7-3 advantage in the second half.

The Cougars will travel to Oklahoma State for a 1 p.m. Central/11 a.m. Pacific match, Sunday.
