PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State soccer won its third-straight match to open the 2013 season with a 1-0 nonconference victory over visiting Eastern Washington, Sunday.
The lone score came in the 19th minute when senior Micaela Castain notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The game-winner came off a corner kick from Castain that caromed off an Eastern Washington (0-4-0) defender and inside the near post.
“Give credit to Eastern Washington,” Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “They made things difficult for us and made plays that kept the game close.”
Washington State dominated the statistics, garnering a 23-3 advantage in shots and a 14-2 edge in corner kicks. The corner kicks were the most in a match by the Cougars since 16 against Arizona in 2001.
The Cougars travel to Boise, Idaho to face Boise State, Thursday at 5 p.m. Mountain/4 p.m. Pacific and Weber State, Sunday at noon/11 a.m.
Washington State posted its fourth-straight shutout at home dating back to last season…Cougars are 5-0-0 at home in nonconference match under second-year head coach Keidane McAlpine and have outscored opponents 17-0 in those matches…Washington State is 5-0-0 all-time against Eastern Washington…senior Rachael Doyle played off the bench in the second half during her season debut.
