SEATTLE – The Washington State soccer team scored three goals in less than 20 minutes to defeat host Seattle 3-1 in nonconference women’s soccer at Championship Field, Friday.
The Redhawks (0-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Julia Besagno converted a penalty kick. Washington State (1-0-0) freshman Kailiana Johnson netted the equalizer when she put home a pass from junior Mesa Owsley after a scramble in front of the net in the 30th minute.
The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board in the second half. At the 45:30 mark, junior Jocelyn Jeffers buried a shot from five yards out off a cross from sophomore Kourtney Guetlein to give Washington State a 2-1 lead. Late in the 49th minute, Guetlein sent another a cross in the box that senior Micaela Castain finished to provide the Cougars with insurance.
“We started off slowly and had trouble maintaining possession early,” Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine said. “We came out with the right energy and the right mentality and were much better in the second half. It was great to see Kailiana (Johnson) get her first goal and some of our newcomers get minutes off the bench. The support from Cougars fans and family here was outstanding.”
Washington State opens its home season with a 3 p.m. match against Idaho, Aug. 30. The Cougars will host Eastern Washington, Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend.
