The Washington State University football team continued preseason camp with a two-hour workout in helmets and shoulder pads Friday afternoon. Members of the 1962-63 WSU football teams were on hand to take in some of practice and talk to head coach Mike Leach.
The Cougars opened practice with field goals as senior Andrew Furney hit from 39 and 40 yards while freshman Erik Powell hit from 30 and 37 yards out in his first live attempts as a Coug. WSU then worked through its regular practice plan of individuals and 1-vs.-1 battles, before going into a couple periods of special teams that focused on punt coverage. Sandwiched in between the two special teams segments, WSU worked through its daily 7-vs.-7 session while the defensive and offensive lines matched up in a running game drill.
In team, redshirt-junior quarterback Connor Halliday led the offense on the first series. Halliday moved the offense down the field early on by completing a couple passes to the running backs. The defense held strong later in the drive by forcing a Halliday incompletion and for him to scramble out of the pocket. Senior linebacker Justin Sagote continued his impressive preseason camp by stuffing running back Teondray Caldwell at the line of scrimmage for no gain. Halliday and the offense bounced back by closing the series with touchdown passes on consecutive plays. The first saw Halliday roll out of the pocket before finding redshirt-sophomore wide receiver Dominique Williams in the back of the end zone for a score. On the final play of the series, Halliday fired a strike to senior wideout Vince Mayle in traffic for the touchdown.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Austin Apodaca opened the second series with a first down completion to sophomore wideout Gabe Marks. The defense countered with freshman cornerback Daquawn Brown’s diving pass break up but the offense answered with a first down catch by freshman wideout Robert Lewis and a shifty run from redshirt-senior Leon Brooks. Apodaca’s lone touchdown pass of the day came on a beautifully thrown ball over the shoulder to Marks who the caught the pass in the end zone for the score. A couple plays later, redshirt-sophomore running back Jeremiah Laufasa powered his way to a first down run for the offense inside the red zone. Junior linebacker Ivan McClennan and senior safety Deone Bucannon sniffed out the quarterback draw on the next play, stopping Apodaca for a loss before the defense closed out the day with goaline stop after a swarm of defenders stopped Laufasa at the three yard line.
WSU continues preseason camp with a shortened practice Saturday at 3 p.m.
