PULLMAN, Wash. - When the South Atlantic League All-Stars take the field, Tuesday night in Lakewood, N.J., former Washington State star Derek Jones will be among the starters.
An eighth round selection by the Colorado Rockies in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft, Jones spent last summer playing for the Rockies' Short Season A affiliate Tri-City (Wash.) Dust Devils in the Northwest League.
This season got off to a rough start for Washington State's career home run leader. He was left off a roster and assigned to extended spring training when the minor leaguers broke camp in March.
After being assigned to the Asheville (N.C.) Tourists, April 5, Jones has made the most of his opportunity. He has spent time at first base and the corner outfield spots in 2013. He will be the Southern Division's starting right fielder.
Jones is batting .262 with 16 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 33 RBI. He has also stolen 10 bases. He helped lead the Cougars to the NCAA postseason in 2009 and 2010 and was an All-Pac-12 selection in 2012.
