PULLMAN, Wash. - Marco Gonzales was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Gonzaga defeated Washington State 7-2 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Tuesday.
With the victory, the Bulldogs (17-10-1) have taken the first-two meetings this season with the Cougars (16-11). The teams meet again, April 16 in Spokane.
"I wish I knew how to get our guys motivated every night," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "I do not feel like we have given Gonzaga our best game."
The Bulldogs got on the board first with three runs in the fourth. The first two were charged to Sam Triece (0-2), who was making his first-career start.
Gonzaga led 6-0 in the seventh before the Cougars scored twice. Jason Monda led off with a single and was forced out at second on a ground ball by Collin Slaybaugh. After Slaybaugh stole second, his second swipe of the game, Nick Tanielu delivered a run-scoring double. After Yale Rosen struck out, Adam Nelubowich doubled to score Tanielu.
The Bulldogs added a run in the eighth to lead 7-2. The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Tyler Olson entered in relief to record the final out and notch his first save. Derek Callahan (2-1) started and pitched five shutout innings for the victory.
Washington State opens a four-game road trip at Utah, Friday, April 5 at noon Mountain/11 a.m. Pacific.
