CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Tishia Jewell notched a goal and an assist to lead UCF past Washington State 2-0 at the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, Sunday.

The Knights (4-1-1) outshot the Cougars (4-2-1) 10-8 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Aline Reis made four saves for UCF and Gurveen Clair recorded a pair of saves for Washington State.

The Cougars missed a chance to score first when junior Brandi Vega's shot hit the post in the 11th minute. In the 20th minute, Jewell assisted on Stacie Hubbard's goal from 15 yards out following a corner kick to give UCF a 1-0 lead.

In the first 17 minutes of the second half, Reis was forced to make three saves, one against sophomore Micaela Castain and two on shots by freshman Nicole Setterlund.

UCF extended its lead in the 81st minute when Jewell tapped the ball into an empty net after Clair collided with a defender. In the 88th minute, Castain's shot hit the post to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard.

Washington State has a short week before traveling to Gonzaga for a 4 p.m. match, Thursday, Sept. 15. The Cougars will play at Idaho, Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.

Sophomore Micaela Castain led the Cougars with four shots...junior Brandi Vega took two shots and leads Washington State with 17 this season.
