Junior women's basketball player Katie Appleton returns for another season as the Cougars' captain after sharing the duties last year.

How has being a captain been different than just being a member of the team?
I was co-captain last year with Kate Benz so the role of captain is familiar. There's more responsibility when it comes to being a captain. There are high expectations on and off the court.

What is your major?
Health and fitness

What is one of the hardest things about playing Division I basketball?
Initially one of the hardest things was playing against great defense and also playing great defense. Coming out of high school, you're kind of focused on offense; you don't really have to defend a great player every night in high school. It's one of the biggest challenges.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I get there really early and start shooting around. I get there about 30-45 minutes before we're supposed to be on the court to shoot around and warm up.

If you weren't a basketball player, what would you do?
I often ask myself this! I probably would want to coach somewhere and stay involved in the game or in athletics somehow. I like what our strength coach does. I wouldn't mind doing that someday at a college level.

How has the transition to June Daugherty and her vision for the program been?
It's been a very smooth transition from coaching staff to coaching staff. We absolutely love her. She's awesome, the whole staff is really. They have extremely high expectations of us on and off the court. That's good because it pushes us to be better and work harder.

How did you end up at WSU?
I took an unofficial visit here my junior year of high school. I loved it. I loved the campus, the area and the whole Palouse. I really liked the team and the college-town atmosphere.

What is playing on your iPod?
Probably some country. If I had to guess an exact song, I would say something by Garth Brooks or Tim McGraw.

What is something most people don't know about you?
Most people don't know that I have most of my family close around here besides my mom and dad. My older brother and sister live in Spokane, and my twin brother goes to University of Idaho. I get to see them quite a bit and they come to the games which is really awesome.
