BEALSVILLE, Md. - The Washington State men's golf team finished the first round with an impressive lead over the field at the Georgetown Intercollegiate at the par-71, 7,102-yard Members Club at Four Streams.
The Cougars finished with a team total of 285 (+1), 11 strokes ahead of second place UNC Greensboro and University of Richmond. Four WSU student-athletes finished the first round in the top 25, three of whom ended the day in the top 10.
Due to heavy rains over the weekend and frost early this morning, the teams were only able to play 18 holes today. The field will play 18 holes tomorrow as scheduled, cutting the tournament to a 36-hole event. This is the second consecutive tournament for the Cougars to be cut short due to inclement weather.
Freshman Hank Frame converted a tournament-high five birdies on his way to the top of the individual leaderboard, finishing at three-under par (68). Frame will tee off tomorrow looking for his first collegiate win and first top-10 finish of the season. His best effort thus far came at the Palouse Collegiate where he finished in a tie for 15th.
Trent Sanders finished in second place, right at the heels of his young teammate. The sophomore carded a 69 (-2) and was one of two golfers to mark an eagle on their scorecard today. With a victory tomorrow Sanders would be the first person in school history to win two tournaments in one season.
"The young guns carried the banner for the Cougs today. Both Hank and Trent played and putted very well," said head coach Walt Williams.
Kevin Tucker entered the clubhouse in a tie for ninth after tallying a 73 (+2). A top-25 finish would give him four on the season and 20 during his career, tying Ryan Camp for fourth on the WSU all-time list. Junior Nick Ellis was the fourth Cougar to finish in the top 25 after ending in a tie for 15th. A top 25-finish would tie him for eight all-time.
Senior Austin Hurt posted an 81 to round out the Cougar lineup.
Play will resume tomorrow with final-round tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m. Check www.wscucougars.com for final results.
