SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Elysse Van Leer scored in the 85th minute to give Washington State a 3-2 victory over No. 21 UC Santa Barbara in nonconference women's soccer, Friday.

The victory broke a 10-match road losing streak for the Cougars (2-1-3) against ranked opponents. Prior to Friday, WSU's last victory on the road against a ranked team was 3-2 in overtime at No. 11 Tennessee, Sept. 2, 2005.

Van Leer's game-winner was the first of her career and her second goal of the season. She entered the season with one goal in 32 career matches. The clincher came after the Gauchos (4-2-0) twice battled back from a goal down to tie the match.

"We've talked about how resilient our team is and tonight was as tough of place to play as we have faced," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We dealt with immense pressure against a very good UCSB team and I couldn't be more proud of our team. To go up a goal twice, give up an equalizer, and have enough resolve to come back and win says a lot about our character."

Kiersten Dallstream scored a pair of goals, the first at 4:17 when she took a pass from Emma Stolz and fired a shot into lower left corner of the net from the top right of the box. to put WSU on top 1-0. UC Santa Barbara tied the game before halftime, but Dallstream answered at 51:27 when she beat two defenders on a breakaway and slipped the ball past Gauchos' goalkeeper Tammy Lenham.

The multi-goal match was the third of Dallstream's career and moved her into sixth place on the Cougar career goal list with 16. It was the second five-point match in her career and her 39 points are eighth all-time at WSU.

The Cougars complete their road trip at Pepperdine, Sunday at 1 p.m.
