PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior Tiara Pittman's goal in the 74th minute provided No. 18 Washington State to a 1-0 victory over visiting Utah in the WSU Invitational presented by NIKE, Sunday at Lower Soccer Field.

With the victory, the Cougars improved to 1-1-0 while Utah fell to 0-2-0. Earlier in the day, No. 6 Florida State (2-0-0) captured the tournament title with a 2-0 win over Gonzaga (1-1-0).

Pittman's goal came on a header in the box after sophomore Shannon McFadden played a ball in from the right side just after crossing midfield. Senior Meghan Berlingo made four saves and posted the ninth shutout of her Cougar career.

"We defended very well all weekend," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "It is a very pleasing start to the year. I thought we were very aggressive today and, for the most part, executed our gameplan."

After a 0-0 first half, Washington State had a pair of quality scoring chances prior to Pittman's goal. In the 63rd minute, the Cougars connected on eight-straight passes, the last of which was a cross from McFadden to freshman Micaela Castain whose header went just wide of the far post. In the 73rd minute, sophomore Brandi Vega received a through ball, but Utah goalkeeper Hannah Turpen came out of the net to smother a shot in the box and preserve the tie at the time.

The Cougars will travel for the first time this season when they play Long Beach State (Friday, Aug. 27 at 3 p.m. Pacific) and host Texas A&M (Sunday, Aug. 29 at 11:30 a.m. Pacific) at the Aggieland Invitational in College Station, Texas.
