PULLMAN, Wash. -- Jamaal Gaines threw seven strong innings and Casey Kelley pounded his school record 24th home run of the year as Washington State salvaged a split with visiting Portland State in a Pacific-10 Conference North baseball doubleheader Saturday at Bailey Field. WSU captured the nightcap 12-7 after the Vikings won the seven-inning opener 12-0 behind the two-hit pitching of Josh Pearce.
Gaines (4-4) did not allow a hit through the first four innings before a single by Erik Remington ended his bid for a no-hitter with one out in the fifth. WSU (25-23 overall and 12-11 in league play) collected 11 hits in the second game, including three each by Scott Randall and Jason Grove. Kelley, who hit his home run in his last at-bat of the two games, drove home four runs to aid WSU's win.
Pearce (2-7) did not allow a hit over the final six innings. He struck out nine and walked just two for PSU (15-33, 3-20). WSU's only hit were Boyd Robertson's single and Kelley's double, both in the first inning.
The Vikings pounded 15 hits off three Cougar pitchers. Jason Grove (1-2) started on the mound for WSU and took the loss, while Aaron Cozzens and Robin Guiver also saw action.
Rudy Zarfas led PSU's hit parade in the opener with four singles, while Rick Southall had three hits. Ten Viking batters had at least one hit, with Charlie Curry the only starter not to collect at least one safety.
In the opener Portland State bunched their runs to pick up a second straight win over the Cougars. PSU exploded for five runs in both the second and fourth innings and added single tallies in the third and fifth frames to pick up the win.
All of their damage in the second came with two outs. Southall's bloop double in front of a diving Scott Randall with the bases loaded accounted for three of the runs, while Rusty Keith singled home one run and the first of two Cougar errors let the final run score.
Keith also drove home a run in the third, while in the fourth Andrade's seventh home run of the year came with two Vikings on base. A pair of bases loaded walks by Cozzens pushed across to more Viking runs in the inning. PSU's final run came in the fifth when Beau Boudreau and Remington cracked back-to-back doubles.
In the nightcap WSU jumped on the Vikings early, scoring five in the first, a single tally in the second and then pushing across four runs in the fourth for a 10-0 lead. WSU's final two runs came in the eighth on Kelley's home run. PSU, meanwhile, dented the scoreboard with four runs in the sixth and added three more in their last trip to the plate.
Kelley, who collected three hits in the two games, doubled home two runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Zach Bode scored one run in the inning with his sacrifice fly to left field and WSU's other run scored on Ray Hattenburg's groundout to short.
In the fourth Randall tripled home Shawn Stevenson and Jason Grove hit his 11th home run of the season to score Kelley. The Cougs also scored one run on Greg Mitchell's groundout to second base.
PSU, after collecting just one hit in five innings off Gaines, used five hits, including two doubles, to score five times in the sixth. Andrade had a two-run single, while Keith and Remington each had run producing singles. In PSU's ninth inning, Southall brought all three runs home with his eleventh home run of the year.
The two teams conclude their four-game weekend series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. single game. The series finale may also be WSU's final game of the year. Originally the Cougars were to host Stanford in a three-game series, but the Cardinal won the Pac-10 South Saturday with a 4-2 win over USC and will meet Washington next weekend in the conference playoffs. Cougar coach Steve Farrington said he would not know until Monday if his club would be able to find another opponent to complete the season.
