VIENNA – The Washington State University women’s basketball team continues its 10-day foreign trip to Austria, Slovakia and Czech Republic with stops at Schönbrunn Palace and Prater Amusement Park Aug. 8.
Throughout the Cougars' travels in Europe, seniors Brandi Thomas, Sage Romberg, and Hana Potter will be keeping a players’ blog of their thoughts and activities. Below is an entry from Brandi Thomas, recapping the day’s events.
“This is Brandi Thomas checking in wanting to give you all an update of our first full day in Vienna!
Today we went on a tour to the Schönbrunn Palace! The architecture was absolutely amazing inside and outside. Outside there were gardens, trees, and fountains all spread out over what was considered the "backyard" of the palace. During the tour we were able to view all of the rooms on only the single floor! The paintings and detail in each room were incredible. They gave us little machines to listen to the history of each room, which was really awesome. I can't believe how many famous people are from Austria! I stood in a room that Mozart played in!!
The culture here is quite different than the usual norm that most of us are use to. The streets are extremely clean, the taxis are Mercedes Benz, and the architecture of every building is unbelievable! I am almost always getting run over by all of the bikers on the streets. I guess that's what I get for always walking in the bike lane! The drivers here show no mercy towards pedestrians. They're always driving full speed ahead and slamming their brakes at the last possible second. Good thing we brought enough girls to Europe!
We definitely fit the tourist profile very well! While we are taking pictures of everything in sight, other people are busy taking pictures of us. Maybe because of the fact that we're so tall! Can't wait to have a day full of shopping tomorrow!”
