PORTLAND, Ore. -- Angela Whyte, an assistant track and field coach at Washington State University, finished fifth in the women's 60m hurdles Friday night at the IAAF World Indoor Championships at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.
Whyte, competing for Team Canada, ran a season-best time of 7.99 seconds for fifth place. She ran a time of 8.09 in the qualifying heats Friday afternoon, third in her heat and the eighth and last racer to advance to the final on time. Her seed time of 8.05 seconds was ninth-best among the 22 women entered in the World Championships. Her lifetime-best time is 7.92.
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, qualified for the World Champs after running a time of 8.05 in Seattle Feb. 27. Last month she was the top Canadian and fifth overall in the women's 60m hurdles at the 2016 Hershey Indoor Track & Field Canadian Championships in Montreal. Whyte, who turns 36 years old in May, was a member of Team Canada at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games.
Americans won the top two medals in the women's 60m hurdles with Nia Ali running a season-best time of 7.81 for Gold and Brianna Rollins ran a time of 7.82 for the Silver medal.
WSU volunteer coach Liga Velvere will compete for her native Latvia Sunday in the women's 800m.
