Men's Golf Spring Outlook

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University men’s golf team opens its spring 2015 season Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii. The Cougars will compete in five tournaments this spring before concluding the regular season when they host the Pac-12 Championships, April 27-29 at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.

“I’m excited to see this team perform in the spring,” head coach Garrett Clegg said. “We did a great job finishing the fall season with a win. For us to continue to succeed this spring we will be looking to our youth to play a huge role in our success.”

The Cougars are currently ranked No. 70 in the Golfstat men’s team collegiate rankings. Washington State will face tough Pac-12 competition this spring, as six Pac-12 schools are currently ranked in, or receiving votes in the GCAA Coaches Top-25 poll.

“We’ve had some great practices this winter,” Clegg said. “I know the team is looking forward to getting the season started. Our seniors are poised to finish their careers on high notes. They’ve all been working hard to get the most out of their games.”

After completing competition at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii, Washington State will travel to Bandon, Ore., for the Bandon Dunes Championship. The Cougars will then travel to The Farm for Stanford’s annual tournament, The Goodwin. In April, WSU is scheduled to compete at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., before traveling to Iowa City, Iowa for the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational, April 17-18.

“It’s difficult for everyone not to focus completely on the Pac-12 Championships,” Clegg said, “but we’re working to stay focused on the tournament in front of us. We open the spring at the John Burns Invitational. It’s a great event, and we’re pushing ourselves to be ready to compete there.”

During the fall season, the Cougars competed in six tournaments. Washington State hosted its annual Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, finishing fourth in a tough field that included Pac-12 foes Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, USC, Utah, and Washington. Redshirt-senior Sang Lee notched his first career individual title, tying California’s Cameron Shaw for the top spot. The Cougars carded an 842 (+2), finishing ahead of Washington, Arizona State, Oregon State, and Utah.

WSU closed the year with a victory at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. The Cougars carded an 841 (-11) to claim the tournament title. Freshman Derek Bayley led the way, notching a third-place finish in the tournament. In total, WSU garnered eight top-10 individual finishes in the fall season.
