Cougars Face Cornhuskers in Nebraska

THIS WEEK: The Washington State University swim team travels to Lincoln, Neb., to face the University of Nebraska at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Natatorium Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31…the trip marks the first matchup between the Cougars and Cornhuskers in program history…the dual will begin Friday at 3 p.m. PT and continue Saturday at 8 a.m. PT.

HEAD COACH TOM JAGER SAYS: “I think our team is tough and will swim well both days. We’re excited to swim in Nebraska in a different environment. We like being on the road. I’m excited to face Pablo [Morales] after swimming with him on the U.S. National team.”

FOUR IN A ROW FOR COUGARS: WSU has won four-straight dual meets dating back to Oct. 24, 2014…the Cougars defeated Arizona State, Seattle, Northern Arizona, and Oregon State, marking the first time since the 2012-13 season WSU has recorded four-straight dual meet victories.

WSU WITH TOP 100 TIMES: The Cougars currently garner three top individual times in the USA Swimming national top-100 rankings…junior Presley Wetterstrom owns the 41st-fastest time in the 200 breast…junior Frederikke Hall appears twice in the rankings, with the 93rd-fastest time in the 100 breast and 200 breast…the Cougars also appear in five relay rankings...the relay team of Alison Mand, Hannah Bruggman, Nicole Proulx, and Haley Rose Love swam the 200 free relay in 1:31.56 at the Hawkeye Invitational for the 32nd-fastest time in NCAA Division I swimming.

COUGS STRONG IN CONFERENCE: The Cougars defeated Arizona State (Oct. 24) and Oregon State (Jan. 23) this season. This is the first time since the 2001-02 season WSU has won two or more dual meets against conference opponents.

WSU ON PAR FOR .500: The Cougars currently own a 4-3 record in dual meets with matchups remaining against Nebraska and Utah. If WSU wins at least one of the duals, it will finish above .500 in dual meets for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

JAGER SIGNS FIVE FOR 2015-16: Ciera Kelly, Linnea Lindberg, Jasmine Margetts, Penny Nichols, and Taylor Shewchuk have each signed a National Letter of Intent to swim for Washington State University, beginning next fall, Cougar Head Coach Tom Jager announced, Nov. 13, 2014.

WSU LAST SEASON: The Cougars finished 3-6 in dual meets last season in a conference boasting four teams in the top 10 at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships…WSU finished eighth at the Pac-12 Championships, edging out Oregon State…the 200 medley relay team of Emma Johansson, Frederikke Hall, Alison Mand, and Nicole Proulx broke the school record in a time of 1:39.45…at the Hawkeye Invitational, the relay team of Emma Johansson, Alison Mand, Haley Rose Love, and Anne Kenney placed second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.66, besting a school record that had stood for nearly five years…12 Cougars earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors…Cougars earned Team Scholar All-America status.

COACHING STAFF: Head coach Tom Jager enters his fourth year at Washington State after seven years coaching at Idaho…the Collinsville, Ill., native is a six-time NCAA Champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist…Jager is joined by assistant coach Adriana Quirke…Quirke assisted Jager during his final three seasons with the Vandals before joining Jager at the helm of Cougar swimming…WSU alumna Kelsey Bruggman rounds out the Cougar coaching staff in her first season as the coordinator of operations.
