LOS ANGELES – The Washington State University swimming team concluded its road trip in Southern California, falling to UCLA, 143-104, at the Spieker Aquatics Center. Top finishes in the 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 freestyle relay highlighted the Cougars' afternoon.
In the 200 backstroke the Cougars garnered the top two spots, as junior Loree Olson touched the wall in a time of 2:04.51 to secure the win. Fellow junior Shaya Shaedler followed Olson with a time of 2:05.78.
Junior Presley Wetterstrom impressed in the 200 breaststroke, clocking in at 2:17.01, 2.59 seconds faster than UCLA's Taylor Carlson. In the final event of the day, WSU's 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Hannah Bruggman, sophomore Haley Rose Love, Nicole Proulx, and Alison Mand claimed the top time, finishing in 1:34.34 seconds.
Mand added a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.96, touching the wall ahead of Wetterstrom in third place (57.87). Wetterstrom was the Cougars' top contributor on the afternoon with 16 points.
“We were pleased with today,” Cougar Head Coach Tom Jager said. “The women swam great. It's good to hit USC and UCLA early in the season and get this type of competition in our system. We're excited to get back and face Arizona next weekend.”
The Cougars return to action Oct. 17, with their home opener against Arizona at Gibb Pool at 5 p.m.
